XIX, inteso nella sua massima estensione cronologica, dalla prima campagna napoleonica alla fine della Grande Guerra: un "secolo lungo" (1796-1918) che ha condizionato in modo determinante il cosiddetto "secolo breve". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dalla quarta di copertina: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Allo sviluppo della coscienza nazionale italiana nell’Ottocento la narrativa ha dato un contributo importante. Componente centrale della maggior parte delle opere letterarie discusse in questo volume è quel “sistema simbolico” che ha potuto agevolare la spinta all’azione politica, terminata con la costruzione dello stato unitario. Ma la tematica risorgimentale è indagata qui anche attraverso gli scritti di autori francesi, belgi e olandesi coevi, senza dimenticare la rappresentazione degli ideali e delle speranze del Risorgimento così come li ha espressi la narrativa in anni vicini al 150° anniversario dell’Unità. Era una folla avida di vederci, di salutarci, e di augurare in nome d’Italia la vittoria al magnanimo nostro condottiero; erano babbi, mamme, fratelli, sorelle, figliuoli, che venivano a dire addio ai loro cari... Da ogni parte, baci, singhiozzi, saluti, mazzi di fiori, strette di mano, e uno sventolar di fazzoletti, e un agitar di cappelli. Quando mi ricordo quella sera e quell’ora, sento gonfiarmisi il cuore, e piango sulla perduta gioventù, e piango sulla tomba dell’uomo che i sogni più belli della gioventù mia se li ha portati con sé!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Con un gesto audace, solo in parte, e ambiguamente, sostenuto dal Regno di Sardegna, un piccolo esercito di volontari si prendeva l’incarico di dare forma e vita all’ideale in nome del quale erano state immolate esistenze, distrutte famiglie; un ideale che per molti aveva significato il carcere e l’esilio. Al sud, al centro, al nord.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Siamo consapevoli che non tutto di quella stagione, e ancor più di quelle che seguirono, è degno di essere celebrato. È un discorso che abbiamo sentito ripetere, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, migliaia di volte: al punto che si è sostituita a una retorica del Risorgimento, che ha fatto il suo tempo, una retorica dell’Antirisorgimento di gran lunga peggiore. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Agli ideali di libertà e di unione che traspirano nelle pagine di molti degli scrittori di cui sentiremo parlare nelle giornate di questo convegno si è sostituita una rozza vulgata negazionista, che vorrebbe cancellare o almeno ridimensionare una delle poche pagine degne della storia italiana recente.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perché il nostro Risorgimento fu anzitutto una stagione di ideali e speranze. E se da quell’Italia “bella e perduta” – come nel titolo del bel libro di Villari – sapessimo trarre di nuovo linfa, il nostro presente sarebbe meno squallido e asfittico.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Auguro a tutti buon lavoro, e son felice che siate qui. Saluto e ringrazio Sira Miori, direttore dell’Istituto italiano di Bruxelles, che coopera con le due università di Bruxelles allo svolgimento dei nostri lavori.
